Why We Love Dolce & Gabbana Children's Wear

The Italian design duo creates dapper duds for the little ones

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s fashion house has long been synonymous with easy Italian elegance, peppered with just enough sass to render the collections perfect for the likes of sirens such as Sophia Loren or Monica Bellucci—the brand’s latest ambassador. And now, after more than twenty years in the industry, the brand has finally launched its first children’s line, catering to kids 10 years old and younger. There couldn’t have been a more perfect time for Dolce & Gabbana to debut its children’s wear, as the upcoming fall season gives us more opportunity to artfully pile on the line’s dapper duds.

The same baroque-inspired, texture-heavy garments that Dolce & Gabbana sent down the women’s runway have been reimagined for girl’s wear. Minnie Mouse shirts and cherub prints meet bouclé jackets and a sheepskin and cashmere cape—the collection’s signature piece. When paired with the Sicily bag and velvet ballerina flats, the result is as poised as anything we have in our own closets. For the boys, the house went back to its roots. The faded denim, thick knitwear, and felt caps that made up the brand’s first collections appear pint-sized now, resulting in a too-cool-for-school aesthetic that straddles the line between beatnik and business owner. The three-piece suits, meanwhile, capture the little man effect to a T.

For all the pomp and fancy in most of the label’s children’s pieces, the most ceremonious garments seem to have been reserved for newborns. For this collection, Dolce & Gabbana looked to traditional Catholic baptism for inspiration, creating pieces exquisite enough for the Sistine Chapel. Dresses, good luck shirts, and blankets come in lace, cashmere, chiffon, and velvet. And earning a place alongside your wedding dress, is baby’s first blanket—an item we know you’ll cherish forever.

As the lines between children’s wear and adult clothing become adorably blurred, Dolce & Gabbana’s fabulous new line begs the question: Does this come in my size?
