The Best-Dressed Baby Bumps of All Time
After receiving the joyous news of a bun in the oven, reality hits—stretch marks, ridiculous food cravings and swelling leave many women hibernating for nine months. When us laypeople opt for a great-fitting pair of maternity jeans and a stretchy top while staying at home and gorging on deep-fried goodness, celebrities don’t have the luxury of laying low. With obligations to attend movie premieres and award-show galas, and with paparazzi at every corner, these moms-to-be are thrust into the spotlight—whether they like it or not.
The challenge of red carpet dressing becomes even harder with a growing belly. The fashion police can be vicious and appearing on any worst-dressed list can be soul crushing. For example, pundits were dismayed by Kerry Washington’s choice of Balenciaga at the Golden Globes. Did she fret? Hell no. The Scandal star came back full force with her knockout Jason Wu dress at this year’s Academy Awards. At the same soirée, Olivia Wilde, in a black column dress by Valentino, gave Washington a run for her money. Her gown choices this year--from Gucci at the Golden Globes to David Koma at the Her premiere--were an astounding display of maternity-chic done right.
Wilde and Washington got us thinking about other celebs is the history of red carpets that eschewed convention and looked even better while displaying their robust figure. The beautiful women in the slideshow above just may inspire you to put down the turkey leg, walk out the door and show off your baby bump with pride.
