Mad Hatters

Wide Brim Hats for Spring

Aside from the beach-appropriate floppy, hats have been mainly used for function rather than style. But taking a look at the spring collections, it seems that hats are making a comeback. Los Angeles-based designers Hedi Slimane, Rachel Zoe, and Victoria Beckham have all absorbed the rock ‘n’ roll chic of the city and opted to have their models adorn wide brim hats in straw and felt.

And though the fedora is often seen as a men’s accessory, the name is actually derived from a play written for French actress Sarah Bernhardt in the 19th century. It has since evolved as the preferred look for rock stars like Keith Richard, and has now become a women’s fashion staple. Just take a look at Elizabeth Street’s Street Style and see all the moms that rock the hat with ease. Just remember to pick something large in a dark rich color, and you too can be imbued with the same edge.

From Saint Laurent Paris to esteemed milliners like Eric Javits and Eugenia Kim, the selection above will have you singing the tune of Joe Cocker’s “You Can Leave your Hat On.” — Barry Samaha
