Giuliana Rancic Spills on Her Latest Fashion Line, Motherhood and Baby Duke
Giuliana Rancic has made her presence known at Spring 2014’s New York Fashion Week. At Tuesday’s Elie Tahari show, the E! News anchor turned heads in a fur-lined metallic gunmetal jacket and textured gold skirt. For Badgley Mischka, the reality star went with a more toned-down look, pairing a cream coat with a form-fitting white peplum dress. Backstage at Dennis Basso, the fur-bedecked new mom posed with the renowned designer and fellow actress Debra Messing.
However, the busy mom was doing more than just frequenting shows and applying her signature smokey eye and nude lip this past week. On Monday, February 10, we caught up with Rancic, a designer in her own right, at HSN’s second annual Fashion Lounge, hosted at the Empire Hotel. Her G by Giuliana Rancic collection is part of HSN’s yearly spring fashion series, known as “The Fashion Edit,” which will air February 13 through March 22.
Amid tables and racks adorned with samples from collections by Rancic, Carmindy, Iris Apfel and more, the fashion and entertainment guru let us in on why her new line is perfect for busy moms, how she’s wrangled time with Bill and Duke despite her hectic schedule, her advice for fellow women juggling motherhood, marriage, and career and her plans for the future:
Elizabeth Street: How has being a mom influenced your designs this time around?
Moms make up a huge portion of my costumer base. We've got things like a cool little leather jacket but we've also got the ponte knit so you can bend over and grab your baby and fix your bag because you’ve got the flexible piece underneath. It’s not like ‘Oh my god, I’m running around today, so I’m just gonna wear something baggy and comfortable.’ You can be fashionable and comfortable and still be able to move in the clothing.
ES: Who are some of your favorite designers?
I’m all across the board. I’m what we call a high-low shopper. For instance, right now I’m wearing Gucci pants with one of my own jackets and a Forever 21 sweater. I’ll wear one of my own dresses with Manolos and a Chanel bag and the whole outfit looks super expensive even though it's not.
ES: Duke’s going on two-years-old now. What’s his personality like?
Duke is 17-months-old, so he’s still pretty young. He runs and walks everywhere. He says ‘Mamama’ a lot. He’s a wild man--an adrenaline baby. Loves speed. Bill will play football with him and run around the room with him. He laughs and laughs and laughs.
ES: Fashion week, preparing this collection, finding time for family…How have you managed it?
You know, easy. This past weekend we had a family weekend, just the three of us. We were in Palm Springs hiking since we knew I was coming here. I put Duke to bed last night and took the red eye. I’m really only gone 48 hours. You make sacrifices.
People always ask me what’s the balance, what’s the secret? I find that there’s never going to be a balance every day. Some days your work is going to need more from you and sometimes your family is going to need more from you. It’s up to you to be flexible and figure out that that’s OK. But if you start off each day with the mindset like ‘today I’m going to balance 50/50, work and family’—that’s just not going to happen. Some days you work more, and sometimes you mom more. Once I realized that it became a lot easier.
ES: Any plans for baby number two?
We’ll see. I’m one of three, Bill’s one of four. We have no plans yet, but we would love to give Duke a little brother or sister—it’s just been so much fun.
