Monica's Apartment on 'Friends' Has Us Running to the Flea Market
This past Sunday, September 22, marked the 19th anniversary of Friends. While the series may not have bested the Simpsons’ record, it’s still without a doubt one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. Nominated for 63 Primetime Emmy Awards, all ten seasons of the series consistently earned top ratings. Translation: A whole lot of us spent a good portion of the years between 1994 and 2004 planted in front of the TV, our world confined to the walls of Monica’s unbelievable apartment.
Fun fact: Throughout the course of the show, almost every Friends character (with the exception of Ross) shacked up in that ridiculous Manhattan pad. Those purple mismatching walls (and the leather couch at Central Perk) will always hold a certain nostalgia for us. Of course, we don’t have to dwell on this sense of ennui—while there may not be any new episodes in the works, episodes still air constantly. (We did hear a little something about a reunion, but with Rachel tied up in planning a wedding to beau Justin Theroux, we more than suspect those were only rumors.)
Still, Monica has finally relinquished that beautiful piece of real estate for good (oh, to be as lucky as a sous-chef living in a spacious downtown pad, complete with a huge balcony and picturesque views of an “Ugly Naked Guy”).
Her sense of home décor, however, which our resident interior design guru, Susie Kurkowski, describes as “rather flea-markety,” left more to be desired that did her location (and was somewhat out of character for an anal-retentive, but then again she was pretty broke). However, if you’re into the whole mismatched-chairs, framed vintage prints, overstuffed sofas, suburbia-meets-bohemia look, (or just any and all that is Friends) click through the slideshow above for some pieces inspired by…whatever you call the look Monica had going on in there….college-dorm chic, maybe?
