Postcard from Marrakesh
Parisian interior designer, and Elizabeth Street Mom, Clelia D’Aulan Benenati has been visiting Marrakesh for over 20 years, making it one of her favorite vacation destinations. “Marrakesh is great for kids because of the wonderful weather and activities for children—plus the people are very friendly,” she says. Situated at the foot of the High Atlas mountain range with the desert to its south, Benenati enjoys that you can “eat breakfast by the pool, and one hour later, be skiing on top of the Atlas.” After shopping in the local markets souks—she takes her two children, Matteo, 7, and Giada, 6, on a tour of the city on, what else? French textile expert Anne-Marie Chaoui’s store shows off her collection of stunning fabrics in linen, cotton, silk and velvet, and will custom make them into curtains, pillows or tablecloths. This upscale design store also sells furniture and home accessories like candles, oils and lamps.

La Mamounia
If you want to experience Marrakesh in luxury, book your stay at La Mamounia, the hotel considered to be one of Winston Churchill’s favorites and the setting of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1956 film The Man Who Knew Too Much. After undergoing a massive three-year renovation, La Mamounia reopened its door in 2009 more majestic than ever. With four restaurants (two of which are headed by Michelin-starred chefs) a 27,000-square-foot spa, and 20 acres of historic gardens—a visit or stay in the palatial grounds of La Mamounia is a Marrakesh must.

Dar Yacout
Located in the heart of Marrakesh, this traditional Moroccan restaurant is tucked away within the alleyways of the medina and you just might need a tour guide to find it. Inside the inconspicuous entryway, you’ll be whisked away into a fantasyland of mosaic floors, fountains, and chandeliers. While the spectacular setting may be the highlight of a meal at Dar Yacout, dishes like vegetable couscous, tagine chicken and chakchouka won’t leave your taste buds disappointed.
