SILKE WICHERT

OCCUPATION: Fashion editor

MY STYLE: Utilitarian, with vintage finds

I LOVE BERLIN BECAUSE: There are a lot of young families and therefore a great variety of facilities and shops. Most of all, it has the right spirit.

Si An

Though the ambiance—lavender walls, suspended lanterns, cranes, and even a birdbath—is half the fun of eating at Si An, Silke Wichert also likes to get her food to go. “I love it when our friends come over with Vietnamese food,” she says. “We always did this for them, too, when they had a newborn.”  Be sure to check out the next-door café-tearoom, too, which spawned from the popularity of Si An’s lengthy tea list.

Teigwaren

Teigwaren chef Anja Gmelin bakes up a mean flatbread, but she’s really known for creations far more robust; her homemade pastas are stuffed with hearty fillings such as feta and tarragon, walnut-chive-gorgonzola, or a simple creamy parmesan. “If I’m too exhausted to think of good recipes, my husband and I walk to Teigwaren to buy fresh pasta with delicious fillings,” says Silke Wichert. And if you dine in the store, Teigwaren offers organic champagne at a reasonable price.

Jugendfarm Mortizhof

This youth farm offers pastoral fun right in the enter of Prenzlauer Berg. While older kids can learn to cook, sow wheat, spin pottery, and weave baskets, everyone—young and old—will love peering at the animals. “We always have a look at the rabbits and ponies,” says Silke Wichert.

Kollwitzplatz Market

This shopping arcade is open seven days a week, but gets especially teeming on Saturdays with the addition of a farmers’ market. Parents go for the fresh-cut tulips and organic produce (not to mention the famed prosecco stall) but, thanks to the nearby playground, Kollwitzplatz is also fun for kids.

Café BONDI

Both the prices and the dining room at BONDI are petite, yet this does not deter Silke Wichert from frequenting the cozy breakfast spot for a morning snack. "They have great coffee and delicious cakes," she says. An added incentive is Mama Moodie, the resident baker at BONDI, who is also a midife. "Mama Moodie is great if I need quick parenting advice!" says Wichert.

Spirit Yoga

Classes at this popular studio range from pre-natal yoga to power lunch and moonlight flow. The staffs from all three locations (Mitte, Charlottenburg, and Prenzlauerberg) work together to organize city-wide workshops led by world-famous spiritual leaders, as well as retreats to Thailand and beyond. Studio director Patricia Thielemann not only trained under celebrity guru David Life, but she also starred in Lindenstrasse, a popular German soap opera!

LPG Biomarkt

LPG Biomarkt has six locations throughout Germany, each brimming with over 18,000 pesticide-free and reasonably priced products. Leyla Piedayesh goes with her daughter to the Kollwitzstrasse branch to stock up on kitchen needs. Her three-year-old daughter Lou "happily helps to buy what we need for the week," says Piedayesh.

Habba Habba

Falafel places are popping up all over the city, but Habba Habba stands out for its fresh ingredients and low-carb salad options, not to mention its signature pomegranate dressing, which tastes good on just about anything. We recommend getting your food to go, and walking along the trendy Kastanienallee.

Engelberg Café

Sweet and savory collide beautifully at this organic café. Cakes are featured most prominently in the display case, but Engelberg also offers a wide selection of sausage, bread, egg dishes, and cheeses imported from Switzerland. The stammer max (fresh bread with thinly sliced ham and fried eggs) is especially popular, but Silke Wichert comes for the müesli. "I'll even come here for a second breakfast!" she says.
