MY STYLE: Eclectic and evolving. My bedroom hides such treasures as a vintage Moroccan wedding blanket, a wooden Ethiopian headrest, a ceramic life-sized boxer dog, and a huge gilded black mirror found at a thrift store. In general, I love the ’60s and ’70s, and how differently they were experienced by the U.S. and Africa respectively. In terms of personal style, I like to try new things, and have gone through phases since I was a kid. I love that the Chinese have the same desire as I do, to be fashion chameleons.
I LOVE SHANGHAI BECAUSE: The Chinese are so friendly towards kids and tolerant of their behavior. Also, you don’t need a car in Shanghai. Our favorite dates involve exploration through biking.
Shanghai Sculpture Park
Based in West Shanghai, this park is perfect for a manageable yet fun change of scenery. Kids will marvel at the freestanding sculptures and, when the heat strikes, the whole family can hangout by the manmade beach. With picnic areas, cafés, grassy expanses, and a sweeping view of the Sheshan Mountains, Shanghai Sculpture Park is well worth its admission price. Extra bonus: You can bring along Fido, as dogs are more than welcome!

There’s no lack of treatments to choose from at Sense of Touch spa, which even offers the controversial “caviar facial” (yes, it is what it sounds like!). From aromatherapy to hot stones to treatments specifically for expectant mothers, customers can bask in the glory of being expertly pampered. And once you’ve had all your whims catered to, you can relax on the rooftop terrace with a snack!
Mary Ching
This luxury shoe and accessory brand reflects both the Chinese and English sensibilities of its founder and creative visionary, Alison Mary Ching Yeung. At the Mary Ching location on Ferguson Lane, you’ll find everything from daring, eccentric stilettos to traditional Chinese slippers, handbags, and clutches—all made locally with superior materials. “I like to pick up some of Mary Ching’s classic Shanghai slippers for visiting fashion clients,” says Mary Bergstrom. “And maybe something for myself while I’m at it!”
Jitterbugs
“Having fun with music, games, dance, and play” is the motto of Jitterbugs, where kids can let loose and get their groove on. Babies will love the Ladybugs class, which consists of gentle movements to music, while those aged one to three can really get down and boogie in the Caterpillars class. With locations spread throughout Shanghai, Jitterbugs is not only nurturing and fun, but also convenient.

Origin
Origin is where healthy Shanghai snacking, well… originates. For hearty and delicious vegan and vegetarian options (not to mention a large selection of delicious juices), this cheery café is perfectly suited for a midday pick-me-up. For those with a little time to kill, the menu can also be enjoyed tasting-menu-style at one of Origin’s dining room tables.
