Junkanoo India Hicks

JUNKANOO: This word must be said in a hushed holygrail kind of way. It defines the culture of The Bahamas and commands the attention and attendance of most Bahamians. On Boxing Day and New Year's Day my boy's, Domino and I go out and 'rush' with a huge enthusiastic group, all of whom have designed and constructed a costume or huge mobile sculpture, made from cardboard box's, covered in finely fringed, brightly colored crepe paper. Everyone is on the street, everyone is taken up.

Kiss India Hicks Bahamas

KISS: Especially on father's day when the hand made card has had the word 'DAD' edited a little.

Lion Bahamas Kids India Hicks Costumes

LION: This lion did not find it amusing having a giraffe next to him. Especially one whose chin was so fat, the zip could not be done all the way up. This giraffe suit had been handed down from two older brothers and smelt strongly of mold. It was also an unusually hot afternoon. The things we do to our kids, right? Cue the LAUGHTER.

India Hicks celebrates the madness

Each month the lovely India Hicks shares personal memories, tips, and reflections inspired by the alphabet and her beautiful jewelry line, Love Letters. In her own words, "My life is hectic. Crazy even. I have too many projects, too many children, too many pets and never enough time. Elizabeth Street puts things in perspective. Other Mums, similar situations. I won't be offering solutions but I will be sharing the madness." And what an inspiring madness it is!
